Evaluation of photo shoots

Throughout the digital image process I found learning about photography very stressful and difficult, as I had no previous experience in this area, and it is not one of my particular interests. But I wanted to create a selection of good photographs that showed I understood the importance of lighting, direction, model pose, make-up application and position of the camera.Having an assistant was helpful during the set up of the studio, as there were two of us to maneuver the boom for the lighting, and position the equipment ready for shooting. It made the whole experience more relaxed, as I work better in a team, and I felt relaxed and confident to direct my model with my assistant backing me up.

I found it difficult to direct a model that I knew, this surprised me as I was nervous to shoot with a model I had only known for a little while, but then became more confident as the session went on. I found poses that I hadn't researched and was able to try new positions with the camera off the tripod; this was then easier to move around and again made me feel more confident. Directing someone I knew was more difficult because the model would move too quickly from not listening to what I said and I would then have to take more pictures to perfect the poses I wanted.

I am very happy with the outcome of my colour shoot photos, as I prefer a brighter image with lots of colour. I chose my model carefully as I wanted a slender girl with big features, I found the perfect model and then chose my colour palette around what would match with her skin tone. I had already bought a scarf that I wanted to use so was able to match the lips, I am very happy with the finished look of my model. Because it was a natural beauty shoot I only added colour to the lips, and kept the makeup of the rest of her skin very natural and minimal.This created a very dramatic effect as the colours matched perfectly with her skin tone, I was very happy with the outcome of the quality of the images as well as the quality of my design process. I wanted the model to have bare shoulders, to initiate the idea of being very natural, I supplied a small crop top to cover her but to leave the shoulders bare.

For my black and white images, I used a different set up and different lighting, as I wanted the colours of the image to come out darker than in my colour shoot. I wanted to create a different feel to the images, one less bright. This photo shoot took longer than my colour one as I had more time booked out so I could rearrange the set up as many times as I needed.

Super Hero Portraiture

I have chosen to look at these images of Superhero portraiture, because they show a link to the Elizabethan portraiture I have been looking at, they also show a good example of the positioning and the lighting of the photograph. Although my photos will be beauty shots; close ups of the face and hands, I admire these photographs and the style of the clothing used. They clothing ties in with the Elizabethan theme because the patterns are very old fashioned and the colours aren't so bright as the originals of the super hero's.

Title:

The Perfect Base (photo shoot for Digital Image Production 1)

Location:

Photography studio infinity cove, Southampton Solent University

Concept:

The theme for my portrait photos will be ‘The Perfect Base.

Technical Requirements:

For this shoot, I will use back and white backgrounds, changing the lighting to suit each. I will be creating three beauty shots, front, side and back view of the model, emphasising her natural beauty. These will be portrait shots, head and shoulders only. I will be using complementary colours on the model to enhance her skin tone.

Moodboard:

My mood board for this shoot illustrates the colour palette I will be using on my model, I will be using a range of analogous tones in a neutral palette, matching and correcting the skin tones of the model. I will be concentrating on the eyes and lips, enhancing the natural features with minimum retouching. I will be using complementary colours on the model, blue and yellow tones for the scarf in the hair and blue on the lips.

Creating a mood board

When creating a mood board it is important to think about the design idea and translate that through the images placed on the board, this will express my ideas to the team I am working with. Some of the ideas I will put on my board revolve around the lighting; whether it is soft, hard or directed light, this will effect the end result, the styling, the model pose and facial expression; this is important for the emotion of the image, whether I want a serious pose a laughing pose or something more reserved and the hair and makeup, this will also direct the emotions and feel of the image.

'Occupied,' this is my chosen word to think about and create a mood board from. I did a little research into the word and tried to think about how to translate it into words and meanings about hair and makeup looks and styles.

This is an image of my research around the word 'occupied,' I first came up with words like job, work, busy sweaty, and translated them into, glossy, shiny makeup, busy and crazy hair, dark emotions, moody, rushed and claustrophobic. But them I also contradicted myself slightly by thinking of the other side; the opposite, words like, weird and wonderful, messy, busy using bright colours and alternative poses and facial expressions.

This was my original design for my mood board, I chose a selection of images that I thought expressed some of my ideas related to the word occupied.

I liked both these images, above and below, the above image shows a model looking busy and concerned in a working environment, this expressed the original idea of being occupied without it only being revolved around hair and makeup. The image below expresses another type of occupied and busy by the hair style, the hair is very busy, there is a lot going on with the high piled curls, this expresses the hair side to my original word.

I then separated the coloured images and the darker images from my board, once separated and made much smaller the two boards then expressed totally different ideas. Still revolved around the same word they expressed two different sides, this image below shows the colourful and alternative ideas to being occupied and busy in the fashion and beauty world.

This image expresses the darker side to my boards, it shows a dark and emotional feeling. I wanted to express a claustrophobic feeling that comes with being rushed and 'moody.'

These images are some of the ones I chose to express the feeling of being occupied, the one on the left was part of my darker coloured board, although the man is laughing, the mood of the image changed because of the colours when placed next to the 'moody' images. The image on the right was placed with the colourful and 'weird and wonderful' side of my board, I liked this image because of the colours used and the strange emotion behind the image, the pose and facial expressions mixed with themes and model.

Reflection:

I have learned how to create a mood board to protect my ideas and thoughts, and although I used many images at first, it expressed two things. I divided the two ideas into dark and light and accomplished a better mood board that didn't have to be big, some boards express all they need to through only a couple of images. This task has helped me to understand the importance of expressing an idea to a team quickly, in a working environment a board will have to be understood by the designer, stylist and model, so a good and quick job is the best way to do it. I now understand how to think outside the box on words that don't necessarily have a connection to hair and make up, I have managed to connect the word occupied with fashion and beauty and expressed this through a mood board.

I prefer the colourful mood board I have made to the darker one, the colourful side expresses a lighter mood to the words I have chosen. Each side expresses a different emotion due to the images and colours portrayed though the boards. My next task is to think about my photo shoots; what lighting I want to use, the model and the pose and facial expression, the styling and makeup, all these properties will result in different images.

Studio photos

Here are a few of the images from my studio session I have selected. I have chosen these because I think the poses and the composition of the photos are the best out of all the images. For these I used a small white umbrella to create a softer light, I also used a black background and white reflectors each side. I am please with most of the images I took today, I found it hard to direct the model to the poses I wanted her to do, after a few shots the ideas ran out, to improve on this I will study different beauty shots to get a better idea for the composition. I want to include the models hand in one of the images, I think including other areas of the body like hands or feet, makes the image feel more casual and unstaged. These girls I used for my models where good at taking direction, they were confident in front of the camera which made it easy for me to get a better shot, relaxation is the key. In some of the images I can see an uneasy look on their faces, this is because I hadn't told them that to do, when I directed them they relaxed and started tome more freely, creating better shot. This is one of the images I have retouched using a phone app I have called facetune, I didn't change her face or the structure of her face, I removed any imperfections and blemishes from her, and I think I have ended up with a good outcome. I like this pose and I think I will use as one of my final shots for my assessment.

Natural beauty shots

Natural Beauty shots

Looking at natural beauty shots I have selected a few that have inspired me to practice my shots and the positions of my model in them. I will practice setting up the studio ready for taking my images quickly and my makeup to make sure I get natural beauty, matching the foundation to the skin tone and ensuring the eyes aren't lips aren't too heavy.
